Childhood trauma can shape a nervous system around survival, creating what modern psychology calls Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Yet Scripture offers another lens through which to view the fire many have walked through. Throughout the Bible, the refining of silver and gold is used as a picture of transformation. Those who have endured hardship often develop unusual discernment, resilience, empathy, and courage. When healing takes place through the renewing of the mind and the work of our Creator, the very traits once used for survival can become powerful tools for purpose. In this article, we explore how survivors of childhood abuse and neglect can move from reaction to intentional response, discovering how the refining process can shape them into watchful leaders, protectors, teachers, and truth-seekers… perhaps even positioned, like Queen Esther, “for such a time as this.”

Sometimes a single word is enough to steady my hands for the year ahead. Other years, the Lord gives me a phrase, or a small collection of words, because the season is layered. Growth, obedience, pruning, and fruit do not always arrive one at a time. They overlap. They intertwine. And they require attention in more than one place at once. Choosing more than one word is not a lack of focus; it is a recognition of the full counsel of the work before me. Scripture itself often pairs instruction with action... root and bear fruit, sow and reap, abide and go. When God is cultivating deeply, He often names more than one thing at a time.

In this final chapter of Rosemary Hayda’s Dominion or Subjugation series, we move beyond navigating sales and resisting impulse buying and step into the deeper, quieter work of the soul. After examining our motives and discerning the world’s consumerist patterns in Part 3, Rosemary now leads us into the hard but holy task of SLAY, identifying and destroying the idols that claim our affections. From there, she invites us to PREPARE, truly prepare, for the return of Messiah Yahushah, tending the fire on the altar of our hearts, testing our spiritual temperature, and offering up whatever the Holy One asks to burn. Through Scripture, song, and sober reflection, this final installment calls us to disentangle from the world, steward our finances wisely, lighten our possessions, and run, like Secretariat outrunning the pack, toward the Kingdom that cannot be shaken.
