I loved Great-Grandma's tea towels. I've never seen any like them. She had a set of stencils she used to paint with adorable African-American scenes on them. I almost hated to use them, they were so pretty.
As a young homemaker, I learned quickly that the themed days of the week are a really good idea. Some days I didn't know where to start. I know some people do all their housekeeping (or most of it) on the weekend but that always left me so tired. I do laundry and dishes daily, but other things I tend to do one day a week. I prefer to have my weekends for rest and visits, so I want the house clean and laundry caught up. |
Tea towels are a special gift idea for a bridal shower or even a birthday idea for a teen girl who's collecting for a hope chest. I don't hand embroidery very well. It's something I should work on. I usually crochet or sew something. If you embroidery or cross stitch, BlondiesSpot store on Etsy has some wonderful printable patterns. I especially like the African-American Woman because it reminds me of Great-Grandma's towels, but also the wonderful African-American cooks of Southern Oklahoma.

"Though domestic occupations do not stand so high in the general esteem as they formerly did, there are none of greater importance in social life, and none when neglected that produce a larger portion of human misery." The Cook and Housekeeper's Complete and Universal Dictionary; Including a System of Modern Cookery, in all Its Various Branches, Adapted to the Use of Private Families {active 1823-1849} Mary Eaton
Isn't that an interesting quote? Imagine someone in the early 1800's writing something like that! It amazes me. What would they think of women today I wonder? Here are a few other old homemaking books available free from Gutenburg.org. I think these are so much fun to read. The ideas, suggestions, and sometimes the totally different way of living is just fascinating to me!
