Developing a servant's heart is such an important thing for all those living according to the Scriptures. Serving others is a theme the Messiah highlighted as His example to us while He was on this Earth. In the iProduct 'selfy' society we live in today, most people have an entitlement mentality. I've seen families who have each child wash their own dishes so the parents don't have to constantly listen to, "It's not my turn!" Really? Is it your turn to eat? Yep, I'm a bit sarcastic about it. If one of my children says something along these lines, they get to wash everyone's dishes for the rest of the week. We ALL pitch in here. We live in a family, not a household democracy or welfare state...

Does this seem a bit harsh? Maybe it does. I do tend to be a very mean mommy. I don't mind people (or my children) thinking of me in that way. You see, I have two adult children who are happy to serve others. They aren't doormats either. They are capable & confident. They also know how to say, "No." Do you? Most of us struggle to get to a point that we are willing & able to tell people no. What does saying no have to do with having a servant's heart? Does it sound like an oxymoron? It's not. Y'shua (Jesus) often says no, yet He is the absolute best example of a servant.

Jesus didn't do everything for everyone. He didn't feed everyone. Some of the people wanted to make Him king hoping He would feed them all the time. No. He came and served those the Father sent Him to serve. Children need to learn to serve especially their family while they are still young so they are in such a habit, with such a heart, they will automatically see the needs of those closest to them first & have the skills to take care of those priorities in a timely order.
Now don't think that I'm saying my oldest children are anywhere near perfect. They are willing to put down the phone or get up from the computer to help. They also enjoy helping others and volunteering occasionally.
The best resource for showing children Jesus' example of serving others is the NEST Entertainment DVD The Greatest is Least. Our older children even still love this video. (I do too!)
