I told her, "Pretend we are setting down to tea & don't be afraid of a rabbit trail or two!" ...and she answered, "I love rabbits, and Alice in Wonderland as far as that goes."
Where are you from?
Well, I’ve always told my children I was an alien and not from this planet, but that’s another story. All kidding aside this world isn’t my home. My home is when I get to heaven with my Lord and Savior. In the meantime... I have had the privilege to hold the pencil while my Lord told me stories of redemption, salvation, faith, and family. We now reside in Shattuck, Oklahoma and love it! God is Good all the time!
Well, my latest published book is a Bible Study; Searching? God is Here! I was struggling with missing my parents, brother, and cousins and this was the verses God brought to me. It is an eight week study on family relationships and our responsibilities in them. There is a lesson, a personal testimony of God’s presence in my life during trials, and then numerous questions and scriptures...
What inspired you to write your first book?
...It was raining on location, the caliche had turned to slime and everyone was having a difficult time walking. Then, out of the corner of my eye I saw him. He was tall, skinny, having long hair for a man. He wore gray sweatpants really they were capris length. He had a skin tight brown T-shirt with a bright yellow arrowhead on the front. The shirt was too small and didn't quite reach the top of his sweats. He was running as if his life depended upon it. He was slipping, sliding, leaping over sagebrush, and dodging scrub cedars. Then as quickly as he appeared he disappeared over the edge of the canyon wall. I began to wonder who he was, where he was going and why. Surely you’ve guessed by now this was all in my mind. But none the less; I began writing what the Lord was showing me each day...
Wow! I can picture the man in my head... Do you have a specific writing style?
Good Question. I guess my writing style has been in the voice of an impulsive, playful, young man. That is told in first person. The protagonist is no longer innocent, raw with natural human instincts to not choose the best choice, but smart enough to fix it by turning to God. My style seems to embrace ADD, ADD-HD, OCD, and dyslexia as special qualities that can be used for the glory of the Lord if we know Him.
I can hardly wait to read one. You make this all sound so intriguing & "get-at-able"! Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
The BIBLE without a doubt. For entertainment and characterization studies Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peabody Series. Sometimes I’m laughing so hard at a characters actions I’m crying. Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell-Sherlock Holmes Series keeps me guessing and always expands my knowledge of people and places. I love books that have facts mixed in with the adventure.
We all need a few books that make us laugh until we cry! I have a few I make a point to read each year. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I’ve read some local authors that I like; Elaine Littau, Jennifer McMurrain, and Darlene Shortridge. My favorite kind of author is one that writes of Christians relying on God and has humor in it.
Those are my favorite kind of authors as well. I love Elaine Littau's books. I need to add these other two to my wishlist! What are your current projects?
When the Lord isn’t pressing upon me to write specifically a story He is telling me I pursue children’s books. There will be a set of “The Very Naughty Grandma Stories”; a series similar to Nancy Drew with four of my older grandchildren and a neice; a set of single titles with the antics of the younger grandchildren. Oh, did I tell you I have 17 grandchildren. The cousins were born close together being separated only by a few months. So we have 2 one year olds, 3 three year olds, 2 five year olds, 2 seven year olds, 2 nine year olds, 2 eleven year olds, 2 thirteen year olds, 1 will be fifteen, and 1 at nineteen.
That sounds like so much fun! I aspire to be a grandmother of many someday... Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I’m so visually distracted it is hard for me to stay on task if I look anything up in my fact finding missions. Also, to find the time to write. I feel for me writing is how I can spread the message God has asked me to tell. My favorite quote that drives me is from Habakkuk 2:2 And the Lord said to me, “Write your answer on a billboard, large and clear, so anyone can read it at a glance and rush to tell the others.”
I think this may end up being a new favorite verse for me now! I just love that rendition. Do you have any advice for other writers?
If you want to be the best you can be write every day. If you’re a writer hoping to give a voice to God’s promises, then be in His word twice as much as you write your own words. Pray that it will be His words on the page and not your own. Finally, Give God the Glory.
Thank you Dawnita for the cup of tea in your rabbit garden this morning. I’ve enjoyed myself so much I hope to visit again soon. But right now, “I’m Late! I’m late for a very important date!” (And down the rabbit hole I go.)
Thank you Pamela! This has been a LOT of fun!
