Don’t Wear All the Hats: Finding Clarity Through Core Values

Don’t Wear All the Hats: Finding Clarity Through Core Values

October 15, 20253 min read

Slow down, step back, and rediscover what truly matters most.

You cannot build a resilient life or business without knowing what you stand for.

I don't want to be all things to all people. So often, we're wearing so many hats and chasing so many shiny objects that we lose ourselves in the mess.

Sometimes we need to step back and consider what’s really important.

  • What are our real priorities?

  • What are our core values?

Through business coaching, core values are a main topic, along with niche, ideal client, vision, mission, and financial goals. If you aren’t in business for yourself, some of these terms may be a bit foreign to you.

Core values are something everyone should be familiar with. I kinda wish now I had understood the concept a bit earlier and taught it in our homeschool. Most of us, with a bit of explanation, could establish or pinpoint our core values very early in life. They tend to be character qualities that are most important to us.

My core values are faith, consistency, and flexibility. As I’ve come to understand the purpose of core values more, I realize my ultimate goal is resilience for myself and others. This is why I do everything I do.

  • Researching history helps me build faith, understand the consistency of repeated patterns, and the importance of flexibility through changing times in order to be resilient through today’s hardships.

  • Sewing, art, quilting, and crafts are things that bring me joy as I consistently learn new techniques, implement flexibility with myself as my skills grow, and become more resilient through the healing of this natural therapy.

  • Sharing what I learn gives me accountability to share my faith consistently, while being flexible to my physical limitations, and helping others grow their resilience.

Setting Boundaries Around Core Values

We’re hearing more and more about boundary setting. It concerns me every time I see someone making a degrading or disparaging comment on a social media post about boundaries. It’s hard for me not to assume that person is a narcissist who doesn’t know how to respect boundaries, or simply has no desire to have to navigate around someone else’s boundaries.

Are you having trouble setting healthy boundaries with people close to you in your family or work situation? If so, it may be partly because you haven’t identified what your core values are.

I encourage you to spend some time meditating and brainstorming on this.

  • What are a few things you have always found very important?

  • What are some things you are just NOT interested in?

For instance, I dislike competition of any sort. I tend to be overly optimistic, having faith that everything will be fine. At the same time, I like to be prepared for anything. The old adage, “Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best,” (or is it the other way around?) is my mantra.

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

“She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.” Proverbs 31:21

We know the blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes, and tragedies will hit. We know we can prepare the best we can for them. We also know when the worst happens, no matter how hard or devastating they are, HE will carry us through.

So, DON’T wear all the hats. Don’t do ALL the activities. Don’t GO to all the places.

Slow down. Rest. Breathe.

Not only set healthy boundaries for yourself, but also encourage those around you to do so as well.
