Having two graduates in the house has changed the dynamics of our homeschooling experience. A few years ago I made a rash purchase. I like science fiction and the children like puppets and I saw a sci-fi show with puppets. I was severely disappointed. The series was not clean at all. It was crude and beyond sensual. Nasty. I’m usually VERY careful about what I bring into the house, especially when it comes to sci-fi and fantasy. Like I said, it was a rash purchase.
When the girls borrowed a season of STARGATE from a friend, we camped out in the Master Bedroom to preview it. I really didn’t figure it would come outside that room, but I looked forward to seeing one of my old TV heros, “MacGyver,” in a sci-fi.
The pilot did worry me. Suffice it to say, there is one scene that could be completely skipped over with no problems. After that, there are few episodes I have any problem with. The older two enjoyed it so much (and were so happy to find something mom approved) they found a whole 10 season set plus movies on ebay. (I didn’t even know they existed. We haven’t had TV programing most of our marriage.)
The series starts with an Archaeologist studying ancient Egypt. He finds out who built the pyramids. It was the Aliens, of course. This starts one of those amazing conversations within our family about how mankind will make some of the most ridiculous excuses to explain away our Creator. Rather than believing Noah and his family had complete DNA and use of their brain; people want to believe we are evolving from cavemen.
Our family knows God created Adam and Eve perfect and that Noah and His family lived in a near perfect environment before the eruption of the fountains of the deep changed things. They lived to be almost 1000 years old. Lots of things before the flood were big, giant, & huge. Just look at the fossil record; millions of dead things, laid down by water, all over the earth. Anyway, I totally believe Noah’s grandchildren and great grand children could have and did build the pyramids and ziggurats all over the world.
What can we learn from this sci-fi series? History, because we actually end up with questions about some of the “civilizations” the characters encounter and Science because we like to look up some of the terms, elements, and ideas they mention. So, over the next few months, we will be exploring ancient civilizations, biology, physics, chemistry, and military strategy with the SG1 team.
