I've heard so many moms worried about teaching art to their children. Being an artist with a very artistic family makes it hard for me to relate, but I promise you I can help solve your problem. You see in our home we have the problem of limiting supplies, books, & pieces of art and making sure we don't get overrun by art clutter. The answer for me is the same answer you need in your home. Don't get overwhelmed by all there is or all there can be. All you need are a few good books on a variety of arts, art history, & famous artists and some basic supplies. I'd suggest a drawing tablet, color pencils, scissors, play dough, watercolor set and a sun-catcher kit. |
I give a few ideas on my Art Page with more in depth instructions on how to practically teach art in a simple and straight forward way. I found some wonderful materials this year that will make it even easier.
My children are really enjoying these 4x6 cards. They include 30 of the world's most famous paintings. The back side gives fun facts behind the pictures and the artists lives. I only found one card that needed editing. We're pretty sure Michelangelo must have been very hot natured or something. He sure enjoyed depicting people without clothes. Anyway, I used a sharpie to put shorts on Adam. I hadn't realized God's cloak in the painting is in the shape of a brain. No doubt Michelangelo was an anatomy student...

This is an interesting treasury of art from around the world. It includes famous European paintings, delicate Japanese prints, and traditional African masks. Each work of art is followed by a project influenced by the artist's methods or ideas. My children think some of the art is really weird. (Which is funny to me. If you could see some of the things they create sometimes! LOL) Several pages in this book are paintings included in the cards. They give different bits of information, making a great complement to each other. The book gives other types of art as well, all something the children can try themselves. You could easily use this book as a one year art curriculum, concentrating on one piece each week.
