Amidst the sales of tempting boxes of crayons, cute notebooks, and necessary pink erasers I always try to look for something different for the new school year. Let's face it, school can't always be "fun" and sometimes even the happiest students aren't looking forward to the new year. Even if they are, a few new goodies help make it even more special. I long ago learned to conserve on supplies and wait for the best possible sales (or hand-me-downs) so our children don't typically get a new box of crayons or pencil set each year. We decorate notebooks to make them special rather than spending on the newest fad. (Okay, I admit defeat all too often here. I LOVE paper!)

Despite my failures avoiding temptation, I do tend to make up for it in toys and "entertainment". Most of our toys, games, and videos are educational. I also like things that make it easy to learn on the go. Diana Waring's audio history series is PERFECT. I enjoyed them with the older two & will be using them more this year with the younger set. I'm also adding some different "flashcards" this year. These Usborne cards are AMAZING and the children can hardly wait to get into them! There is a set of first number cards too, but I would suggest having your little one help make their own with stickers. They'll be proud to have done the project themselves and if they get lost or torn, you won't be so concerned about it. What ideas do you have to make this year's "Back to School" special?
