I LOVE classic literature. I start reading chapter books to my children at a very young age, one or two chapters a night. I look for books with strong characters and moral lessons. I stop and talk to them about why decisions and actions of the characters is right or wrong and how things might have been done differently. I ask them to think what would be the best way to deal with certain situations and how God would want them to act. This has turned out to be an excellent exercise. As they grow older, begin to do things on their own, and I am less immediately involved, I am confidently watching my older children work through their decisions in a logical & Godly way.

Charles Dickens is one of my favorite authors of all time. While I really prefer unabridged stories usually, A Tale of Two Cities is definitely one I'd suggest the children read from here instead. The history they can learn from these is wonderfully "real".
Here are five of Dickens's best-loved stories: Oliver Twist, Bleak House, Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities and David Copperfield-wonderfully retold for easy reading for ages 8 & up. |
Last, but definitely not least, my very favorite author is Louisa May Alcott. My Great-Grandma gave me an old copy of Little Women that I treasure.
