I may be getting sappy in my old age, but there were several times I cried with Deana while reading this book! I’ve read this entire series and gotten really attached to Deana and her family and friends. Mrs. Polf has taken real letters from WWII and woven a beautiful story into the history and real events of the 1940′s. I was honestly picturing the clothing, scenes, and planes of that time. The detail she goes into of how the drafting and designing of those great machines is amazing. I could almost picture myself watching Howard Hughes fussing over the blueprints! At times, I had to stop and ask Hubby about certain things. The boys and I got out our big book of Airplanes to look up different ones. We were amazed! This was an incredible read I truly enjoyed!

Forever Thankful (Engineers of Flight Series) (Volume 6)
Description: 1944. War was still going on. Three years and no end could be seen by Dena. She was weary of rationing food, fuel, and clothing. She was tired of men being killed. Every family had a loss, it seemed. Blue stars and flags hung on every home. After three months away from Carl and her boys, Dena enjoyed the chance to sit and watch her sons play. She was expecting another child in early August. So far she felt great, but… 1945. Changes came to Dena’s household and to the nation. Both Roosevelt and Mussolini die while Hitler commits suicide. Dena wonders how the world will cope and will this end or escalate the war? Carl takes a job a Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA. More changes. Dena will move across country. Her heart is raising three children yet she still wants to fly. Will she ever fly again?
Bio: Oldest of five children, Sherrilyn Polf was raised approximately 90 miles Southwest of Wichita, Kansas on a farm where she learned responsibilities and the love for nature that only could come from a close family and not so close neighbors. She loved writing and started creating stories and poetry while still in grade school. Sherrilyn is no stranger to war. Born during World War II and spending time in Germany with her husband, Dewey, during the Vietnam War, she continues to use these personal experiences to provide much of the prose and poetry in her work. You can read my interview of Mrs. Polf HERE.

WWII is an important part of our history. Many aspects are not fun to learn about. They are humbling, sad, and downright disturbing. This is especially true if you understand the depth of the trouble our country is in right now. I won’t go into all my very firm political views, but I’d like to share some wonderful resources you and your children can use to make a thorough study both serious and enjoyable.
Some movies we watch yearly are
The Hiding Place, Hidden in Silence, & Life Is Beautiful.
Some books I strongly suggest:
Number the Stars
Run for your life! by Betty Swinford
Corrie Ten Boom: Shining in the Darkness (Heroes for Young Readers)
And definitely check out these other resources:
