Cowboy hats are a practical part of everyday life here on the prairie. They give a bit of shade and protection from sun, wind, & dust. You seldom go anywhere in the panhandle without seeing a feller with one on.
Cowboy hats come in many shapes and sizes. Watching a cowboy pick out a new hat is something to see. They can be pickier than a woman choosing a new handbag! Some want a tall crown, some want short. Some want a wide brim, some want narrow. Some want a fancy band, some want simple. Even the feather in the band is a very personal choice. Sometimes they will even have a special occasion hat for church. |
Cowboys usually shop for a new hat twice a year. They will get a new straw hat each summer and a new felt hat each fall. At least you HOPE they do! You see, that hat gets VERY nasty. A good hat will not be completely comfortable until it has been blown off into a mud puddle and at least one cow-pie. Those hats also end up getting very greasy and dirty. The women in the family often have to beg, plead, and sometimes even DEMAND he go shopping with her for a new hat. (By that time he usually only has one pair of jeans without holes and is in need of new boots too!)
