Memoria Press Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set #TOSreview

I've always loved the look of Memoria Press catalog. How does one decide on a limited budget though? I hadn't realized these literature guides can be bought separately. You don't have to buy a whole set. We had the opportunity to review the Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set ​which goes with some books we've read, or been wanting to read. I'll definitely be more apt to consider buying guides for future books we read. This goes nicely with our Charlotte Mason style of learning. If you think you'd love to try Charlotte Mason methods but are afraid you'll miss something, these are a great way to start. The questions and vocabulary words will make an excellent base and springboard.

If you're using a true Trivium or Classical education technique, you won't want to purchase these as a set. The suggested grade level is definitely flexible though, so you could easily pick & choose guides for books that will fit the time frame you're studying.

​The student books are workbooks to be used with one student. I have a few children who prefer filling out workbooks, so it's really nice for them. Each chapter has two facing pages so they can fill out, which is really nice. It's all right there at a glance for teacher and student. The teacher's book pages are laid out exactly the same as the student book except with answers and a table of contents. Each lesson includes:

• Preparing to Read Review & Study guide preview with Reading Notes, Vocabulary, & Comprehension Questions.
• After Reading Quotation Questions, Enrichment, and sometimes Unit Reviews and Tests.

Its is suggested to mark vocabulary words in the book, so you might consider getting each child their own book. These are all great classic books they may eventually want their own copies of anyway. That's a wonderful way to help them start their own library to take with them when they are ready for a home of their own. Memoria Press sells the books as well, which is nice.

Since the purpose of this review is the  and not the books themselves, it's presented a challenge for me in sharing with you about each of the guides we used. I share some of the highlights from each:

• Hobbit - Includes a Runic Alphabet Translation with sentences for the child to translate himself and Creature List for him to describe each race in the book. It also includes maps of Wilderland.
• Anne of Green Gables - This is a thicker guide, including some of the poems and prose referenced in the story as well as a map of Canada. You get lots of history plus some botany in this guide.
• The Bronze Bow - Discusses various Jewish traditions and the attitudes of various people to them and the Roman occupation. I would have liked seeing more Scripture reference.
• The Trojan War - This guide digs deep into the character & motives of the characters and their relationships. The discussion opportunities with this guide are excellent especially if you have a solid Biblical worldview.

If your family is lacking a strong Biblical foundation, I strongly suggest supplementing with Bible-based guides too. There are many great ones available. Or spend a year really studying through the Bible before using these guides. All study of fiction should be carefully balanced with God's Truth. HE offers amazing insight into things like Tolkien's imaginative works and the Trojan's classic, polytheistic society.

All in all, I'll probably buy more of these to go with some of the great classic literature I regularly read with our family. I'm grateful for the opportunity to review this Seventh Grade Literature Guide Set with our family.
