It has come to my attention that some people in our community think we are evil because we won't let our children participate in halloween.

Let me set the record straight. Our children choose not to participate.

We have provided them with information about the practices and history and they have made this choice themselves. Yes, the information we provided is biased, very biased. You are welcome to review it and leave a comment here with your thoughts. I will only delete comments if they are derogatory or crude. So if you can comment as a respectful & polite adult, I'd be happy to review your reasoning with our family.

If you are part of our community and truly concerned about our children missing out on candy corn, homemade caramel apples, or popcorn balls, I would be happy to have them dress up (they may already be, we dress up regularly) and come for a visit on any other day of the year to receive your delightful treats. Just a note, some of the family is allergic to corn (chocolate is a great substitute, hershey candy bars & kisses don't have corn).

Evert time i tried to research what halloween is about, i got so utterly confused i gave up. Good for you all to stand up to your believes. If you have told me that you banned kids from ever celebratinf their birthdays again, i would be worried. But halloween? Bah...

LOL. That's funny Eva. We do talk about some of the pagan traditions with birthdays too, but so far we haven't given up blowing out candles & having fun for those. These are family decisions, not something you can really succeed in "banning" without lots of consideration. Bless you!

I didn't watch the video you included, but we don't do Halloween either. Personally, I dislike even the "fall festivals" that so many churches have as an "alternative". Why? Because to the world, it looks like the church has "accepted" this holiday. The fall festivals doesn't look much different to Halloween from a non-believer perspective. The kids are still in costume, though some do not allow "evil" costumes (such as witches or vampires) or may even go so far as saying it much be a Bible character.
If you look up the origins of this "holiday", you will find there is nothing "glorifying to God" in how it was started. Its a remembrance of the dead.... to differing degrees in different countries/cultures.

I have one friend that uses it as "outreach" and hands out tracks, etc as they go door-to-door, but even that is a "stretch", imho. God has called us to be "in the world, not of the world" (Romans 12:2).

Amen Trena. We've considered handing out tracks, but hubby isn't even comfortable with that. As the children grow & become adults, there are other dynamics to consider. I just feel it's very important for them to understand history. Blessings!

Hello: Thanks for putting this link party on my page !!! I love how your children choose the right way!! I'm hoping mine do as well.. I have one four-year-old son, so for now it's all lollipops and gumdrops at Halloween... We don't put a huge deal on it... He gets candy from Grandparents and visits my Grandma, His birthday is November 4th so we put more of an emphasis on that, which is very convenient. I can't wait to poke around on your blog, I love your name and logo :)

So glad you visited Amanda! We did participate the first few years too. It's hard to let go of when a grandparent is excited to see the children dressed up & excited. After Paul's mother passed away & we moved to the country it was much easier to let go of. No-one wants to take time to come out here.

Dawnita....I have never celebrated Halloween.... never. I turned out just fine. I came from Ukraine and there is no such holiday there. I can to America at the age of 5. My 4 children never celebrated Halloween. They do not want to either. My children asked me to stay home this Halloween and not to go out shopping in the morning because they dislike seeing scary Halloween costumes. We too dress up all of the time. It is fun to dress up but we do not celebrate Halloween. So nice to know that there are others like us. Be blessed and thanks for sharing. :)

Thanks for sharing Irina. Children don't grow up weird if they "miss out" on a tradition or two. Each family should have their own traditions as far as I'm concerned. Dressing up all the time is a lot more fun! I've even gone to the grocery store with my tiara on. Why not? LOL

We don't do Halloween, either. I don't really understand why that upsets people. We don't celebrate Kwanzaa or Ramadan, either, but you don't see folks getting upset by that. People also get upset when they find out we don't put up a Christmas tree or do "Santa".

Isn't it ironic how that works? We had few people upset about santa because we never did it. We decided not to when we first married before we had children. Most people would have no idea if we had a tree because they never come to visit, but knowing we don't seems to bother them.
