Shih tzu's were bred to keep the Emperor's feet warm. I keep trying to tell Pistol this, but so far he'd rather bite my toes. This Queen's feet are cold!
Poor puppy, he's teething pretty bad today. I'll be glad when he's past this. His little growl is soooo cute though! Yes, I've moved into a new season of life. The 'house dog' season. We've never had a house dog before. The dogs come in when it's stormy or something, but that's just a limited area for a short time. I figured since I'm not having babies anymore, I should have a puppy. |
For those of you who haven't followed me through the many blog evolution before Prairie Dust, I'll give a brief history. Growing up, I had a Great Pyrenees/ White German Shepherd mix. He was my very best friend. We got him before I started school & he passed during my Senior year in high school. A few years after we married I ended up with a Austrailian Shepherd/ Husky mix that I loved dearly & took everywhere with me until he passed in 2007. About 2010, I fell in love with an Aussie mix puppy that only lived a week before he passed from parvo. As you can see, I'm a one dog gal & grieve for a few years before I'm ready for another. I've been looking for a few years for a Shih tzu or Havanese puppy. I decided to get a low-shed, playful breed. I don't usually like little dogs, like chihuahuas or toy poodles... I also wanted a healthy, registered pup this time, but wasn't willing or able to pay a lot of money. So, I've kept my eyes open & finally found this little cutie close enough and within my price range. I'm happy that I was patient. He was worth the wait!
When I picked this puppy up in July (not long after my birthday), I had a list of name ideas the children had helped me put together. We decided to wait till I met him before I decided which adorable name would be his. When I met his parents' mom though, I felt prompted to ask what they had been calling him. She said her husband had been calling him "Pistol" and had almost decided to keep him. I knew right then that Pistol was the perfect name. His papered name is Pistol Ewok McNugget. Hubby calls him Ewok & the children call him McNugget or Smidvarg. As long as someone has a treat or a toy for him, he'll come.
He has his own routine now, visiting the dogs in both yards off and on throughout the day and visiting each of the children's beds in the mornings to wake them all up. He knows who in the house will give him yummy scraps. After his bath & a good brushing, he gives me kisses and runs off to roll around until he looks all scruffy again. He has definitely become a part of our family. He even sat in for our family pictures!
