Forbrain – Sound For Life Ltd is a bone conduction headset used to improve language and speech by creating an audio-vocal loop to develop awareness of phono-grammatical practice. The idea is to improve attention, concentration, and memory. We are very excited about the opportunity to review the Forbrain especially for our son who has speech difficulty from respiratory illnesses as a baby and our oldest who is Hard of Hearing. Let me share first that this is a high quality device with its own case. The science backing it up is exciting. This is an investment well worth the cost for any family which children who have speech difficulties or special needs. I really wish we'd had it much, much earlier.

I will mention with disappointment that our oldest was unable to use it with any benefit. Her hearing loss (which is in her brain from a head injury) only allowed her to receive static from the device.
I have had the other children using the Forbrain nearly every day during their read aloud time. We had to work ourselves up in time using it. At first it starts to hurt your head after about 10 minutes. I even got to feeling a little seasick. With very young children, I'd probably start with 5 minutes a day or maybe twice a day and slowly work up. Ours were able to work into a 15-20 minute session pretty fast. They have specific suggestions on the website and in the information card that comes with it.
The most significant difference I've seen is needing to correct our son less and less with his speech. At first when I needed to correct his pronunciation, I'd have him pronounce for me, then put on the Forbrain and say the word, then pronounce it slowly so he could really hear himself. I didn't have to do that very many times before he got the idea. We are of course also dealing with his voice changing, but even that seemed to become less pronounced.
Another thing I was curious about was if it would make a difference with those of us in the family who are a bit tone deaf. (ie..me) It is the consensus in our family that I should maybe always put this thing on ANY time I decide to sing. I actually follow our musical gals fairly well, harmonizing, but when we try melody... well, they don't run away with their hands over their ears, but... Two others in our family also sounded better with it. There was no detectable difference with two others, but one of them has perfect pitch anyway. One of our girls who has a beautiful voice sounded much stronger and louder with it. She's usually a very soft singer, but this really helped boost her volume. No-one was worse with the Forbrain. I really think this could be a wonderful tool for music teachers.
