For the rest of you:
- Lindsey is an excellent writer in my opinion. She has real talent. This book is engaging and fun. We thought we knew exactly where she was going; but she surprised us several times along the way.
- The Grave Winner is not just creepy, but funny too. Lindsey's descriptions of the town, people, and lunch room food are so relatable, they are really funny.
- If I had to rate creepiness on a 1-10 scale with Frank Peretti's Present Darkness at a 10, Dracula at an 8, and Steven King off the chart... We'd give The Grave Winner a 5.
- Language. I realize these are "rebellious" teens with attitudes. At least every curse word was in context of the situation. She wasn't throwing them around just for fun. I know this is how young people in such circumstances talk. (Been there, done that, could have a t-shirt, but I wouldn't wear it...) If not for the language, I would say nearly anyone 12 and up interested in creepy stuff could read this book. Personally, I don't think it's professional for a writer to include them. It could easily say something like, "She cursed under her breath."
- There is some sensual content. Lots of chemistry and heat, but it is tasteful. Ms. Loucks did a great job with the confusion of those electric teen years. There are a few first kisses, but they aren't dwelt upon.
Since The Grave Winner is based in our area, some of the locals may enjoy it. I do suggest you check out her interview and get to know Ms. Loucks. She's an interesting character. {pun alert} Kathryn has a fun interview of her over at Depths of Imagination.
