Traditional Logic I Complete Set is an in depth introduction to formal logic by Memoria Press. It includes a DVD with lesson lectures, a teacher's guide, test booklet and a student book. I have wanted to try this for a long time and was excited about the chance to review it. The program is very, very thorough. The terms and vocabulary used are very concise. We definitely exercised some brain muscles with this program. I do have to say the content is very dry. There are few diagrams and visuals that really capture the attention of our family. The examples were simple though using dogs, cars, & manners that we could all relate to.

Each chapter in Traditional Logic I Complete Set contains 4 daily lessons. This worked good for us to watch the video on Monday then do a lesson a day the rest of the week. I do wish the book were laid out differently. I would have liked it better if each daily lesson were presented within each chapter. Instead, the chapter is first then the lessons after which tell you what part of the chapter to read each day. So I had to go to the back of each chapter to find out what we were supposed to be covering for each day. Not a big deal, just a big cumbersome.
The daily exercises include:
There is a LOT of emphasis on terms. The vocabulary isn't simple, typical, every-day speech. The children felt like they were studying something from Data on Star Trek Next Generation or Eugene in Adventures in Odyssey. It seems quite technical. I couldn't just ask the daily questions with the Teacher Key. I needed the book too. It would probably be better for our family if I went through this course by myself first and taught the children my own way with examples and extra history. I'd like them to learn more where some of this has come from and more about the people who have developed this type of reasoning. I'd also like to have more historical examples of it's use. That would make more sense to me than concentrating on words like "quantifier" and "syllogism".
The quizzes in Traditional Logic I Complete Set are each one perforated page (front & sometimes part of the back) and could easily be pulled out of the booklet to give individually. The final exam is 3 pages (front, back, front of 2 papers).
I'm sure if you started your children's education with a very strict Classical approach, this logic would be easier. I also think it is an awesome program for anyone wanting to go into Law, Politics, or Debate. As a matter of a fact, any adult considering running for office locally or otherwise would find a real benefit in reading this program. I know once our boys have finished it, they will be better prepared for that possibility in the future.
