Truthfulness is an important Character trait to make sure the children understand as early as possible. Some children learn it easier than others, but all struggle with it at some point. First, you need to understand without any doubt, if your children see you lying, they will eventually lie. Be an example of honesty & truthfulness tempered with discernment. Anytime you catch your children (or hear someone else) be indiscreet in their honesty, make sure to 'practice' what would have been better to say without compromising the truth. Character takes practice. There are some wonderful ideas at CharacterFirst! Honesty resource page.

Veggie Tales have an amazing way of teaching children Biblical principles. The boys are especially interested in superheroes and think Larry-Boy is awesome. When they were little, they thought the "fib" was scary. Actually, falsehoods should be frightening. This video helps children visualize how lying can become overwhelming and the only way to defeat one is by telling the truth.

These "Adventures from the Book of Virtues" are interesting animated stories that pull from myths, legends & proverbs to teach children Character. I didn't know if I'd like these when I first saw them, but quickly warmed up to the fun way of teaching real truths in a way we can all relate to. The bits of history are fun to follow through with as well.
Teaching truthfulness can be lots of fun, especially if you start early. Make sure to check the links below for books too! |
