This is the time of year to go through the winter clothes. I usually cut the girls' worn jeans into capris and serge long sleeves into short sleeves. We go through the dresses and donate the ones that are too short and make rags of the worn out t-shirts. In the midst of sorting clothes I also start considering and watching the weather. Wild Oklahoma Weather Preparation is a MUST. I start getting out our insulated gallon jugs, saving cottage cheese containers to fill with water and freeze for ice, and set a backpack by the door with flashlights, snacks and other things we may need if we have to spend a night in the neighbor's cellar. Teaching children about weather is important.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

My favorite book on weather is part of the Wonders of Creation series. I love these colorful and informative books from a Biblical perspective! "Michael Oard earned his master's degree in atmospheric science in 1973 from the University of Washington. He was a meteorologist with the National Weather Service beginning in 1973 and lead forecaster in Great Falls, Montana from 1981 to 2001." This is an awesome resource!

Homeschool Legacy's "Once-A-Week" unit studies are fun and so informative. In this study students discover the extraordinary intricacies of God’s amazing weather machine as they observe and record the weather around them, grow crystals, conduct simple science experiments, track hurricanes, and so much more with Weather on the Move.
Something perfect for this time of year is the activity the children will do in putting together a severe weather preparedness kit. Make sure you have extra water and a backpack full of necessities by the door in case you need to run for the 'hidey-hole'! |
