I moved in the middle of high school. I had taken German, then moved to a school that only offered Spanish. I grew up with a little of both languages around me, but taking one consecutively after another was confusing. I still, to this day will get words mixed up between the two languages. I can definitely understand a lot more than I can competently speak. Throw in a definite Okie drawl and... well, I'm probably doomed in the multilingual department.

The children would like to learn but homeschooling on a tight budget makes it hard. I could probably get a tutor, but honestly, I'm lazy. We did sign language with our two graduates and now that the next batch is the age to start something, I've been tossing around ideas. Thankfully we have studied Greek and Latin roots and I know that will help. Maybe when our internet finally catches up with the 21st century, I'll check youtube for free online lessons.

For a great foundation in vocabulary and foreign language, I strongly suggest getting English From The Roots Up. It is a program we've used off and on for over 15 years and still love. Usborne has a wonderful selection of books available in Spanish. Here are just a few. We have the First Thousand Words in Spanish and have found it very helpful. Now if the children want to know how to say a word, they can easily look it up. I know we would all enjoy the Mexican Patterns to Color. So many pretty designs! Of course, our dog loving would enjoy the dog book. Below is a fun video of a mommy reading one of the little Spanish Usborne story books about Little Brothers. (She put in English subtitles. Thanks Margarita!)
